The Malaya Campaign Playlist

The OG Principles of War podcast, the Malaya Campaign series has over 135,000 downloads. The lightning Japanese victory, part of a much larger strategic campaign to enable Japan to secure the resources to ‘solve the China problem’ came as a strategic shock to the Allies. This series starts with an overview, an analysis of the Centre of Gravity for the participants and then provides vignettes that highlight each of the ten principles of war. Examples of exemplary leadership are given and it concludes with an After Action Review, distilling the lessons learnt from this tragic campaign for the Allies.

Deception PME Spotify Playlist

All warfare is based on deception. Or is it all good warfare is based on deception? Our deception playlist looks at deception at 2nd El Alamein and at the Yalu River in the Korean War. Op Bertram for 2nd El Alamein’s Operation Lightfoot was a strategic, operational and tactical level deception plan that was baked into the manoeuvre plan. Aided by a great Sigint coup by the 2nd/24th Battalion, which shaped the Information Domain in favour of Montogomery.

The Yalu River episodes look at how willing to be deceived MacArthur was, not in pursuit of national goals, but of his own. Once the deception was up, the United States Army would commence the longest retreat in its history – a salient lesson on the importance of avoiding the enemy’s deceptions.
